I'm intrigued by your comparison to The Wind in the Willows, but I'm not sure I agree with it. While both are dealing with animals who are basically people, Grahame's is much more lighthearted and funny than this one. That is because Coville is playing so much with that Bronte gothic type. She has a lot going on and I don't think she managed it all perfectly by any means. Wouldn't put this in my Newbery contender list, but did like it a lot.
